Introduction to the Digestive System

A more in-depth look at the head

The Stomach

The Duodenum

The duodenum is the first segment of the small intestine. It is a mixing bowl for partially digested food leaving the stomach, now called CHYME, BILE which is produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, and PANCREATIC SECRETIONS.

The Ileum

The ileum is the second segment of the small intestine. This is the site for the ABSORPTION of NUTRIENTS! Watching the video below, pay close attention to the adaptations of this part of the small intestine that improve the EFFICIENCY of ABSORPTION

Probiotics and Enzyme Supplements

Nutrients and Food Tests

The video below discusses where carbohydrates (starch and sugar), proteins and fats are found in our diet and how we can test for them. At the end of the video you should be able to describe how to:
  • use iodine to test for starch
  • use paper to test for fat
  • use benedict's solution + heat to test for glucose
  • use copper sulphate + sodium hydroxide to test for protein
Summarise the colour changes for each test in your revision notes.

Looking at our food tests in more detail this next video shows the action of salivary amylase. Your knowledge of iodine colour changes will be helpful in understanding.

Investigating starch digestion

Amylase breaks down starch into glucose. The next two videos explore how to investigate starch digestion. The first video uses the indicator iodine. Before watching the video copy the table below into your notes and fill in the prediction column.

Prediction of what will happen when iodine is added

Actual Results

Explain the results by discussing the structure and function of the enzyme

Starch + water

Starch + amylase

Starch + boiled amylase

Starch + pepsin

This is the second video experimenting with starch digestion. Again, copy the table into your notes and complete the prediction column before watching the video. After watching, complete the second and third columns.

Prediction of what will happen when Benedict's Solution is added and heated

Actual Results

Explain the results by discussing the structure and function of the enzyme

Starch + water

Starch + amylase

Starch + boiled amylase

Starch + pepsin
